Navigating Podcast Episodes Delightfully: A UX/UI Case Study for Spotify
Spotify, one of the most popular music streaming apps in the world, includes other forms of audio content such as podcasts. However, finding a series of podcast episodes can be challenging for users. To address this, I have designed a UX/UI concept using data driven design methods for a dedicated “Series” section in the Spotify app that provides an enjoyable and streamlined listening experience for podcast series fans.
Finally! No Need to Manually Search for Each Episode!
Through user research and design, the new “Series” section brings delight to users by making it easier for them to discover and listen to their favorite podcast series. The new feature allows users to quickly find and follow the series they want to listen to, without the need to manually search for each episode.
100% of users found it frustrating to search for a series of podcast episodes on Spotify
The design process began with user research and competitive analysis of other music and podcast streaming apps. From there, 5 user interviews were conducted to understand how people use the Spotify app to listen to podcasts. The research revealed that all user found it frustrating to search for a series of podcast episodes on Spotify.
Swipe horizontally or click on the “Series” button to view all available series within the podcast.
The new “Series” section was designed with a guiding principle of providing a fast and efficient user experience that allowed users to quickly find and listen to their desired podcast episodes. The section appears adjacent to the “All Episodes” section, and users can swipe horizontally or click on the “Series” button to view all available series within the podcast.
Accordion menus for the right visibility
Series are listed in an accordion menu that provides users with a quick overview of the available series, helping them to quickly identify and select the series they want to listen to. When the accordion is open, users can see a brief description of the series, as well as the option to follow, save, share, and play the series.
Thumbnails were created using a color derived from the podcast image
Thumbnails were created using a color derived from the podcast image, which helped to visually connect the series to the podcast it was associated with. This helped to break up the text-heavy nature of the series section page, making it more visually appealing and engaging for users.
All new icons were consistent with Spotify's visual language
As part of the design process for the new "Series" section in the Spotify app, it was important to ensure that all new icons were consistent with the existing Spotify style. This involved carefully considering the visual language and design principles used in the app, such as the use of simple shapes, bold colors, and minimalistic design. By adhering to these guidelines, the new icons were seamlessly integrated into the app, maintaining a cohesive and recognizable user experience.
That's it!
In summary, the new “Series” section in the Spotify app brings delight to users by making it easier for them to discover and listen to their favorite podcast series. The section provides a fast and efficient user experience that allows users to quickly find and listen to their desired podcast episodes, with intuitive interactions such as the dropdown adding to the user's enjoyment of the experience.
